This past Tuesday, our grade 11 and 12 boys had the opportunity to travel to Stratford. After studying The Merchant of Venicein grade 10, students were eager to see how this controversial play would be staged for a modern audience. Many of the students picked up on the subtle additions, interpretations and nuances that led to the portrayal of an understandable Shylock, a conflicted Jessica and a remorseful Portia. The setting of late 1930s Facist Italy impacted the complexity of the play as well. Prior to the show, the boys participated in an exciting and enjoyable stage combat workshop – learning how to safely choreograph sword play. Thanks to Mr. Lazar for organizing and chaperoning, as well as Rabbi Perlmutter, Mr. Roberts, Dr. Marentes and Akiva Buckman for chaperoning.
