Chanuka is the great symbol of defiance in the Jewish experience. Both the miracle of the oil and the military victory of the disorganized band of priest-warriors over the Greeks shattered the status quo and defied the natural course of history. This is our eternal story. Chanuka binds us all together in the battle to defy this natural course. We, Am Yisrael, will not stand down to the darkness that continues to close in upon us- sheb’chol dor va’dor omdim aleinu l’chaloteinu, v’Hakadosh Baruch Hu matzileinu miyadam. This Chanuka, light a match with your family and friends, push away the darkness – sura choshech, and continue to defy the status quo from attempting to define us and our holy Torah.
