Our grade learned in chevrutot with students in the 11/12 Beit Midrash Gemara class, followed by a shiur with Rabbi Ziring. We asked the question, “are you allowed to use electric lights for Chanukah”? After considering a number of sources, we concluded that the power source must be limited. So, for example, a battery is acceptable because it has a limit to its power, similar to candles. A chanukiah that is plugged in to a wall outlet, would not have the same limitation. Thank you to Rabbi Mazer and the YU Torah Mitzion Beit Midrash for facilitating the learning
